How is free software different?

And how does that affect a PR campaign?

  1. It's free!

    1. Not as much of an advantage as you might think

  1. No central authority

    1. Journalists and customers need "quotables"

    2. Can point to chief maintainer or commercial maintenance organization; existing customer base; related companies in the commercial world.

  1. Divergent distributions

    1. Packaged solution usually not available

  1. Diffuse, volunteer workforce

    • Downside: "You get what you pay for" with volunteer labor

    • Upside: Help in unexpected, geographically diffuse places -- and lots of it.

    • Project is only as good as its central maintenance body
